Abstract

[eng] To what extent did the social crisis of May-June, 1968, affect the 1968 summer holidays of the French people? A number of households refrained from going away in June and July, but there was a fairly substantial recovery in August. The rate of departures observed by the annual « Summer Holidays survey» nevertheless fell, whereas a certainly slow but very steady progress had been observed for several years. The number of people who would have gone away in «normal times » and failed to do so; can be estimated at 900 000. . It is difficult to pinpoint precisely the social groups whose holiday behaviour was affected by the events of May and June. Only the influence of income can be shown; the 900 000 cancelled departures were among households returning an annual income of less than 20 000 Francs (350 000 of them showed an annual income of less than 10 000 Francs).. The length of stay was shorter than in 1967. There was at the same time a reduction in the number of days holiday spent in France and an increase in the number spent abroad. . The proportions of holidays spent outside France had practically not changed since 1966. At the same time it appeared in 1968 that income had a smaller influence on the choice between France and abroad than before. The proportion of holidays abroad in fact increased appreciably among low and medium income households.
