Abstract

[eng] This study makes a comparison by social status category, of the results of the two major consumption surveys of 1956 and 1965. . First of all, at the overall level, the author finds that the dispersion of incomes within each category has remained very stable. He then examines the divergences in the trend of aggregate consumption, corrected for overall price movements specific to each category. He finds that the consumption of managers, as well as that of the self employed, have increased less than the average, while that of households whose head is not employed has, on the contrary, caught up part of its lag. On the other hand, the consumption of the lowest paid wage-earners has moved further from theaverage between 1956 and 1965. . The second part is devoted to an examination of consumption by purpose — the salient points are the progressive saturation of the demand for food, the influence of social category on expenditure on clothing and health, the distorsions caused in the matter of housing by the lack of unifromity of the market, the diffusion of motor cars and television, the uneven proportion of people who go on haliday. In many cases, graphs show the elasticity of the partial consumption under review in comparison with aggregate consumption.
