Abstract

The paper is an attempt to point out the cosmopolitan orientation of Constantin Stere’s work, which offers an exquisite sample of modern thought, anticipating as early as the end of the nineteenth century such actual problems as nationalism, anti - Semitism culturalization and globalization. By using examples from two of his major works, this study focuses on the central doctrine of his writings, which are centered on the idea that the national feeling should not exclude the opening towards universal values as a background for the self – awareness and self – assertion of any nation.
