Abstract

This paper reconstructs the history of the early textbooks of public finance in Italy during a period characterised by a growth process leading this discipline to achieve its scientific autonomy. The analysis is divided into two sections: the first one concerns the textbooks published from 1858 to 1878, the year in which the first chair of public finance was founded; the second period concerns the textbooks published in the period in which the discipline spread in Italian Universities, until the coming of marginalism, which marks the transition to modern public finance.
