Determinantes de la automedicación en el Perú

Abstract

The phenomenon of self-medication, which consists on the consumption of medications without the physician's supervision, is widely spread in the Peruvian society This paper investigates the factors that bring about self-medication, based on a microeconomic model of rational choice. The results of our estimation show that the main factors are the language of the head of the family, the severity of the illness, the family's income level, if the individual has a health insurance, the time that the patient spends in the hospital, the expenditure on medicines and medical attention. Finally, we propose two policies in order to reduce self-medication: the reduction of the time spent in hospitals (through improvements in efficiency) and to insure al1 the population.
