Abstract

La afirmación de que sin el oro y la plata aquí no habría rey “por no tener interés ni utilidad alguna” resulta igualmente justa. Por el desarrollo de su economía general, Europa sólo podía ser impulsada a la práctica de la colonización por una mercancía muy específica, la moneda mundial, la cual superaba la dificultad del transporte a larga distancia, debido a que “el oro y la plata tienen la ventaja, con respecto a otras mercancías, de que a su gran peso específico natural -peso relativamente grande en un espacio pequeño- corres- ponde un peso específico económico, o sea el incluir (objetivar) relativamente mucho tiempo de trabajo, es decir un gran valor de cambio, en poco espacio.“2 Ahora bien, por el grado de desarrollo de su producción mercantil y la crisis que enfrentaba respecto a las fuentes proveedoras de oro y plata, Europa era una economía abierta a la alternativa de nuevos centros productores del medio internacional de cambio y de pago.
