Economic Inactivity

Abstract

The economically inactive are defined aspeople who are not in employment orunemployed. There are many reasons whyan individual may be inactive, for example,they might be studying, looking afterfamily or long-term sick. These individualsare not part of the supply of labour butare important as they are potential laboursupply in the future.This article examines inactivity trendsusing information from the Labour ForceSurvey. It shows trends from the early1970s and the characteristics of inactivepeople. It then looks at some of thereasons for people being inactive..
