Monocropping for Agrofuels: The case of Brazil

Abstract

Maria Luisa Mendonça discusses the current expansion of monocropping such as soybeans and sugarcane for the production of agrofuels in Brazil. She argues that in addition to environmental degradation from the indiscriminate use of natural resources, has led to both an increase in food prices and to an agricultural model based on high exploitation of workers and dependence on Trans National Companies. As a consequence, agrofuels take up some of the best agricultural lands in Brazil, displacing food production and destroying protected areas of the beauty and biodiversity of the Amazon and Cerrado.
