Analysis of the evolution of the determinants of health nutritional status of children aged under five in Senegal

Abstract

In Senegal, available information on malnutrition provides sufficient information on the nutritional status of children. Still, the review of existing literature on the nutritional component of health policy reveals the need for harmonizing the actions taken by various stakeholders. Once the nutritional status is assessed and its causes are identified, the emphasis must naturally focus on the identification of policy variables with the highest probability of success. This paper performs an econometric analysis using all available information on of nutritional health indices, stunting and underweight, to determine the factors underlying the deterioration of the nutritional status of toddlers. Our results indicate that the index of wealth, an indicator standard of living, explains relatively better the nutritional status of children aged between 0 and 59 months.
