Abstract

The private health insurance is one of the most important sectors of the insurance industry in the developed countries. In Spain, in 2005, this activity means 8.84% of the emitted premiums of the whole direct insurance. However, its importance relies not only on the financial market but on the medical field as well. So the analysis of any aspect related to this economic sector has, with no doubt, a great interest. This work is focused on the study of the prices of the private health insurance policies. The methodology we have used is based on the hedonic price theory. This perspective allows to take into consideration the benefits that policies have, in order to study the fixing process of prices, in addition to the personal features of the policyholders. The significance of variables such as the psychological assistance or the coverage of some prosthesis suggests that this approach could be appropriate to analyse this issue.
