Abstract

First, in this study we try to highlight the evolution of the banking system concentration in Romania for 2001 – 2011, taking into account the values of market share of the top five (CR5) and HerfindahlHirschman Index (HHI). Novelty of this study is that it aims to test whether the StructureConduct-Performance Paradigm holds by investigating the relationship between concentration and banking system performance in Romania. We observed that the competition in the Romanian banking system increases continuously in the last years, but the Romanian banking sector remain relatively concentrated, according to the value of CR5. We find that is a positive correlation between market concentration and performance in Romanian banking, according to the Pearson`s correlation coefficient.
