Abstract

Spain joining the European Community (European Union (EU), today) in 1986 brought it into a much more competitive environment. The Plan for the Promotion of R&D within the Pharmaceutical Industry (FARMA) was one of the R&D programmes designed by the Government within an important reform plan aiming to facilitate the development of several industrial sectors. Several input-output indicators are reviewed to measure the effort made, the resources provided by the pharmaceutical companies and the outcome of the programme in the 1986–1996 period. Global resources devoted to R&D increased slightly. Domestic companies contributed more than multinationals, thus enabling the former to discover, develop and commercialise some new products in some EU markets and in the USA.
