The challenge for social science: a new role in public policy-making

Abstract

In a fast changing world there is a great need for better informed public policy, which creates a necessity for a social science contribution. Five key targets are presented: social science must increasingly develop an international research base; social scientists should recognise the need for communication of research to policy audiences; those responsible for policy development should recognise the increasingly necessary contribution of social science to public policy; policy-makers should acquire the basic skills of analysis of social science; and policy-makers and social scientists must establish a dialogue that recognises the common purpose of their missions.
