Third World Debt and Wheat Imports: An Analysis for Selected Countries

Abstract

Questions have been raised recently concerning the potential threat of a reduced ability to import in nations where external debt is rapidly increasing. The central purpose of this paper is to explore to what extent external debt is having on LDC wheat imports. A model, which allows for increasing government intervention as the capacity to import decreases, was tested using time series data (1970–1985) for six wheat importing nations.
