Determinants of Profitability in Farrow-to-Finish Swine Production

Abstract

Cost estimates for feed, facilities, labor, operating, health, reproductive performance and average selling price were derived from four years of on-farm data from farrow-to-finish swine producers. The effect of each independent management area on profit per hundredweight of pork produced was estimated. Feed cost was found to have the greatest impact, followed closely by the cost of facilities. The quantity of feed consumed per hundredweight of gain and the cost of the ration had nearly equal impact on feed costs.
