Reliability of Linear Programming Software: An Experience with the IBM Mathematical Programming System Series

Abstract

Results of this study raise serious questions concerning the reliability of a widely used commercial linear programming package. Three versions of IBM linear programming software were considered in the study: MPSX, MPS/360,and MPSX/370. Repeated solution of a large linear programming problem using MPSX yielded different objective function values. All solutions were found to be nonoptimal when compared to the dual solution. When the same problem was solved repeatedly using MPS/360or MPSX/370, the optimal solution was obtained each time. Users of the IBM MPSX linear programming package should consider alternative linear programming software.
