Abstract

To implement the German Energiewende and advance Germany’s environmental sustainability, resources must be extracted, at least partly, under difficult social circumstances. In this study, we create a scoring model which classifies and evaluates resource-demanding projects regarding the social circumstances at the mining of the resources they require. The application of the model on the resource demands for eight potential expansion pathways of the German Energy System highlights the increased consumption of commodities like cobalt, gallium, as well as rare earth metals, required for technologies like energy storage, as well as solar and wind-power plants, negatively impacts the social footprint of the German Energiewende.
