Abstract

Big Data is on the rise - and the possibilities for research seem endless. The enormous amounts of data allow analyses that were not imaginable in the past. However, serious problems can arise when causal relationships are proposed based on correlations that may not even exist. We present experiments as a way to identify causal relationships and show different applications of experimental research: In the field, in the laboratory, and in a combination of the two. Finally, we argue that Big Data paired with experimental research designs can be an exciting combination.
