Abstract

Industrie 4.0 represents a multifaceted phenomenon which is, in effect, relevant for all industrial organizations. Due to various imponderabilities, such as technological uncertainties or financial risks, organizations collaborate based on interorganizational complementarity in order to generate business model innovations. How these network-based business model innovations can be managed, remains largely underexplored as of to date. Based upon the example of the Industrie 4.0 facility SmartFactoryKL, we show how networked innovation platforms can be developed as a basis for digital business model innovations, what limitations have to be faced and what the respective Industrie 4.0 specific features are.
