Abstract

Membership in an association, in a club or as part of a commitee is basically free and should therefore contribute to life satisfaction even if it forces people to spend time and money for their engagement. In the case of missing incentives, the person has an exit option at all times and with only a small risk of social sanction. This paper presents empirical evidence of the link between membership in civil society organizations and life satisfaction at a national and comparative perspective. This macro-level analysis is based on data from the World Value Survey. The concept of associative member value is introduced in a second step and serves as a frame of reference for a theoretical explanation. It is followed by an overview on existing empirical studies on the relationship between the perceived member value and the membership outcomes (satisfaction, commitment, engagement) at the organisational level. The paper closes with an intermediate evaluation and an outlook for happiness research in the context of civil society membership.
