Abstract

This article is dedicated to the question whether and to what extent transdisciplinary ‘real world laboratories’ (RWL) can be ‘real utopias' in two respects, since they address socio-political problems in a co-creative research mode and aim to have a transformative effect on society in accordance with real-utopian objectives. In the context of this paper, the 'double' utopian potential in the process and in the subject of transdisciplinary research is expounded and critically discussed. The argument is illustrated by the ongoing transdisciplinary real-world laboratory "Transferwerkstatt: Wissenschaft-schafft-Politik", which is dedicated to the real-utopian goal of enhanced citizen participation.
