Abstract

This paper presents the results of a research project on participation practices in cooperatives. Drawing upon the perspective of sensemaking in organizations (Weick 1995) and 14 qualitative case studies of cooperatives from selected economic sectors in Germany, the study proposes a typology of four types of participation in cooperatives, each representing a specific pattern of practices and sensemaking processes in regard to participation. The type of management-controlled participation is characterized by hierarchical and market-oriented action. In the frame of customer-oriented participation the member benefits financially as a customer. Project-based participation puts the joint implementation of a certain project in the foreground, and, finally, value-oriented participation is anchored in sustainability driven and milieu-specific cooperatives.
