Abstract

(Transferring the idea of citizenship to actors of the market sphere implies an interconnectedness of political arenas and market arenas that are at tension with traditional concepts of citizenship. Applying the ideas of citizenship on corporations and consumers raises questions concerning the extent to which citizenship is a suitable category to conceptualise political action within the market sphere. Hence, the paper aims at scrutinising recent notions of consumer and corporate citizenship against the backdrop of the historical and philosophical principles of citizenship in order to reveal constraints and analytical potentials of using the term citizen with regard to market actors. Moreover, the contribution looks at the reciprocity of consumer citizenship and corporate citizenship.)
