Abstract

(This paper deals with the importance of civic values for a social market economy with regard to the theory of ordo-liberalism and post-war economic policy in Germany. It demonstrates that the ideas of ordo-liberal economists are deeply rooted in civic values, referring to the liberal tradition of the 19th and early 20th century. Besides this, it analyses how the ordo-liberal thinkers go beyond the background of traditional liberal thinking by introducing the concept of social justice. The paper also explores the relevance of civic values in the German economy and society after 1945 in relation to the perception of the economic system as a social market economy. Furthermore, the consequences of cultural change during the second half of the 20th century as well as current challenges to the social market economy are discussed.)
