Abstract

Based on an enlightened concept of culture, we propose a reconceptualization of ethics in general and business ethics in particular. Cultural (Business) Ethics is aiming at, firstly, contributing to a better understanding of economic practices in society; it, secondly, offers normative orientations, and, thirdly, combines (positive) social science and (normative) ethical approaches consistently. In doing so, we distinguish between a ›cultural theory of normativity‹ and a ›normative theory of culture‹. These two perspectives on the subject matter represent two sides of the same coin. Our conceptual framework makes it possible to develop a ›grassroots ethics‹ that is anchored in concrete ›life-worlds‹ and at the same time allows for ›normative elevations‹.
