Abstract

Wine growing and fruit arboriculture activities are concerned with environmental issues because of the use of pesticides that leads to a non point source pollution of water surfaces and undergrounds. In response to the issue, some producers adopt Voluntary Environmental Approaches (EVAs), which are presented as contracts aiming at improving environmental performances beyond legal requirements but within the limits of a formal or informal system. These approaches represent spaces of coordination between producers and consumers that are based on more or less localized interactions. The analysis is based on a survey of 3500 wine and arboriculture exploitations, which reveal that the choice between organic farming (OF) and integrated farming (IF) is determined by distinct and separate factors. Then, further work in terms of costs - benefits analysis would greatly enhance our understanding of DEV.
