Le programme rawlsien apocryphe

Abstract

Avec Théorie de la justice, John Rawls (1971) influença durablement la philosophie politique, la théorie du choix social et l’économie normative. Il existe une interprétation particulière de l’œuvre de Rawls, fruit de la combinaison des ambiguïtés entretenues par Rawls lui-même et de la réaction initiale de ses lecteurs économistes les plus prestigieux tels Arrow, Sen ou Harsanyi, prompts à attribuer à Rawls la volonté de créer une théorie économique de la justice. Cette interprétation fut suffisamment unanime et systémique pour fonder le programme rawlsien apocryphe : faire de la théorie du contrat social un exercice du choix rationnel, ce qu’on appellera plus tard le néo-contractualisme. S’il est aujourd’hui admis qu’un tel programme ne fut jamais celui de Rawls, ce texte a l’ambition de reconstituer ce malentendu et d’en souligner la fécondité.
