Le Comité flamand de France (1853-1940), société savante ou mouvement régionaliste ?

    Abstract

    Créé en 1853 à Dunkerque, le Comité flamand de France avait à cœur la conservation et la promotion de la langue populaire, le flamand de France, participant au mouvement des « mémoires locales ». Héritier des Sociétés et Académies de l’Ancien Régime, il s’apparente également aux anciennes chambres de rhétorique qui ont fleuri dans toute la Flandre, française et belge. Si son appellation de « comité » laisse supposer qu’il est le premier mouvement régionaliste en Flandre française, dès avant la création de ce concept, il est également classé par le CTHS comme société savante, seule forme associative de ce genre admise au XIX e siècle. Cet article cherche à lever l’ambiguïté en mettant en valeur l’originalité de ce que certains appellent la genèse du mouvement flamand français, soucieux depuis la création du Comité, de se démarquer à la fois de la Flandre belge et de Paris, militant pour un régionalisme à la fois linguistique et religieux et, à partir des premières années du XX e siècle, mettant en valeur l’art, le folklore, le terroir et l’architecture.
