    Abstract

    Pour des raisons autant professionnelles que confessionnelles, les premiers syndicats chrétiens d’employés, fondés à Paris par les Frères des écoles chrétiennes en 1887, s’engagent en faveur du repos dominical et se félicitent du vote de la loi du 13 juillet 1906. La CFTC s’efforce d’enrichir ce droit durant l’entre-deux-guerres grâce à des revendications partagées avec la CGT sur la semaine anglaise et la journée de 8 heures. Dès les années 1930 et après la Libération, les syndicalistes chrétiens insistent sur la défense de la famille, principale bénéficiaire du repos dominical. La CFTC soutient la revalorisation des allocations familiales, l’octroi d’un logement décent et le retour de la mère au foyer quand elle le souhaite. Les tentatives, au nom du libéralisme, de remise en cause de ce droit dans l’industrie ou le commerce sont aussitôt dénoncées et combattues avec vigueur.
