Workability and Strength Prediction of Recycled Coarse Aggregate (RCA) Concrete

Abstract

India is producing a lot of waste material from construction and destruction of various structures and where to dump this waste has become a big threat to the nation. The continuous use of natural resources for making conventional concrete leads to the reduction in their availability and escalates the cost of coarse and fine aggregate. The maximum possible utilization of recycling demolition waste as coarse-aggregate in the construction industry is a growing interest and matter of serious concern in the research with greater significance. The practical usage of the demolished waste saves not only the environment but also preserves the land, mineral and renewable resources of nature. The various characteristics of Recycled Coarse Aggregates (RCA) are to be determined for their suitability before their use is being made in producing a strong and durable concrete. Focus is made in the current paper to determine the workability and compressive strength of RCA concrete The present work is concentrated to determine the workability and strength of concrete produced by using the RCA (collected from various places of demolished buildings) in various percentages, (10, 20, 40, 50, 75 and 100) for M20, M25 and M30 mixes as a substitute for Natural Coarse Aggregate and the tests are done in the laboratory as per IS codes’ specifications. Based on the experimental results, it is found that recycled coarse-aggregate can be safely used only in limited applications because they absorb high quantity of water.
