Abstract

The purpose of this empirical research is to describe the situation of independent booksellers, as they are threatened by a modest overall demand of books and the growth of chain stores and shopping centres. Retailers and customers of some independent bookstores in Modena and Reggio Emilia were given a survey, whose results clearly demonstrate how geographical proximity and customised services act as the main strengths of this kind of shops in the new competitive scenario.
