Abstract

In the present article I analyzed education and professional training in the North-Eastern Development Region from two perspectives: social and economic. For this purpose I used a number of indicators: demographic (the region's total population, birth rate, infant mortality rate), indicators of the quality and effectiveness of education and professional training (such as school population, teachers, educational infrastructure - number of schools, classrooms and school offices, laboratories and workshops, or the number of computers in their equipment), indicators of internal efficiency of education and professional training (school dropout rate, number of graduates, the number of pupils who passed the baccalaureate). I also analyzed the link between the level of education and the employment structure in the region, in order to capture the level of the fulfillment of the main aim of the educational process: the insertion in the labor market and the decrease in the unemployment rate. This research is a first step in achieving a broader objective: that of identifying the extent to which the North-East Development Region currently meets the requirements imposed by the knowledge-based society.
