Abstract

This paper is an attempt to present some ideas for evaluating and selecting materials for the English class to get students motivated and engaged. Motivation is the most important factor in success in language teaching, since it determines the students’ level of attention during classes, and the assiduity with which they do their homework and revise their knowledge. Nevertheless, are all students motivated in the same way? What is my role as a teacher in my students’ motivation? How can I sustain it through the materials I use? How can I tailor my teaching to match my students’ personalities and their different intelligences? I have to answer these questions if I want my students to get to successful learning. The act of teaching is essentially a constant processing of options, and it is up to me what methods and materials to choose to see what works for my aims.
