Abstract

The enforcement of minimum wage has often been criticised by employers and economists. Employers argued that paying their employees as high as minimum wage rates would make their products less competitive. Whereas economists argued that enforcing minimum wage law in a labour market characterised by an excess supply of labour, would aggravate the unemployment rate. In this article, the author showed that employers refusal to act according the law has triggered workers strikes which has been more often recently. He argues that to overcome the problem, all players in the labour market should understand and act according to the Pancasila Industrial Relations (HIP), which is based on harmony and cooperation between workers and their employers.
