Abstract

Early in the 90s, there was a serious controversy with respect to the recent evolution of income allocation in Colombia. Part of this controversy focused on the problem of censuring, i.e., the imposition of a maximum ceiling to income record in household polls. This article deals with this controversy and applies Pareto’s methodology to solve the problem of censuring. A series of Gini indexes are designed between 1990 and 1995 which shows a strong equity deterioration until 1993 and a slight improvement between 1993 and 1995, in the main seven urban centres of the country. It seems that what has happened during these years in the labour market has had more influence on this result than the commercial opening itself.
