Abstract

In modern industrialized countries the labor market participation of married women with children has been increasing during the last decades. At the same time there is an observed decline in labor supply of the husbands. This tendency towards despecialization cannot be explained in traditional models of time allocation which predict a complete specialization of at least one of the spouses. This paper develops a framework that combines elements of economic and social exchange between family members. By this means, equilibria that are not characterized by complete specialization of at least one partner are explained.
