Abstract

The TSS Dissertation Prize Competition is the oldest and most prestigious competition for doctoral dissertations in the transportation science area. This is the report on the 1997 competition. Eligible doctoral dissertations were those completed and submitted between June 1, 1996 and May 31, 1997 in the area of transportation science. To be considered, a dissertation had to be nominated by the thesis supervisor. This year, 17 dissertations were submitted for consideration by the ludging committee which was chaired by Professor Martine Labbé, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. There were two first prize winners. Dr. Gregory D. Glockner of Georgia Institute of Technology and Dr. Sarah Stock-Patterson of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. An honorable mention was awarded to Dr. Kalidas Ashok of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Extended abstracts for the 17 dissertations are provided below, winners first and then, in alphabetical order, by author.
