Abstract

We show how to model combined mode-route choice and location-destination-mode-route choice problems with interdependent travel impedances. Our models realistically extend the well known route choice equilibrium conditions to include mode choice as well. These models extend earlier combined models to the case where flows by different modes affect each other’s impedances. Our combined models consider distinct classes of travelers. By formally stratifying travelers into different groups, a more accurate analysis of the time-cost tradeoff in mode choice is possible. An extension to the combined distribution-mode split-assignment problem is also given, using entropy terms to model dispersion among different origin-destination pairs. We examine the computational aspects of these models and suggest algorithms for solution.
