Abstract

One of the most urgent considerations confronting management scientists and operations researchers today is the placing of a value on the management science activity and the measurement of its contribution to the business/industrial organization. At the TIMS/ORSA meetings in Boston this spring, concern for this question seemed recurring in the minds of many of those attending. There is little question among those in this field that the contribution is real and that the value to the firm is great. The major concern is how to measure it and how to prove it, first to oneself and then to others. It seems to me appropriate that we address this question directly in this column.
