The Occasional Observer: Market Structure Matters—The Case of Academic Journals

Abstract

Academics talk about the marketplace of ideas. We use this as a metaphor. However, there is a real market out there since the publication of academic journals makes up a major segment of the must-have market for giant publishers. The structure of this market has serious implications for our access to information and budget consequences for professional societies and university libraries.
