Abstract

Overview of the competition for the 24th annual Franz Edelman Award for Management Science Achievement, sponsored jointly by INFORMS and its practice section, the College for the Practice of the Management Sciences (CPMS). More than 40 entries were submitted. First prize in the competition was given to Harris Corporation—Semiconductor Sector for the innovative use of management science in creating a functioning, companywide integrated manufacturing production-planning and order-quotation system. The system, known as IMPReSS, dramatically improved the on-time delivery of 18,000 products, thereby significantly enhancing the company's global market position and overall profitability.
