Abstract

The 21st annual Franz Edelman Award Competition marked the beginning of the third decade of a competition that has matured into our profession's most honored award for the practice of management science. The Franz Edelman Award for Management Science Achievement is jointly sponsored by TIMS and the College on the Practice of Management Science of TIMS and ORSA (CPMS). The quality of the submitted work was very high, and it was a difficult process to select the seven finalists who competed at the joint TIMS/ORSA meeting in Orlando on April 26, 1992. As usual, the presentations were of the highest caliber, which made the work of the judges very difficult.The purpose of the competition is to draw out and reward outstanding examples of work done by our profession. The prize is awarded for implemented work that has had significant, verifiable, and preferably quantifiable impact—not for the paper submitted nor for the presentation describing the work. The client organization that used each finalist's work is presented with a plaque commemorating the prize. The authors receive a replica of the plaque and cash awards that this year totaled $15,000.
