Abstract

Productivity the strategic variable is operational productivity. Its improvement has been the goal of numerous programs, a goal not often achieved. Superficial analysis of current manufacturing activities has contributed heavily to this lack of success. Considerable insight is required to pierce the haze surrounding manufacturing. Many analysts, lacking this insight, have relied on generalizations. However, a brief review of manufacturing systems, processes, technology, facilities, and personnel reveals that each factory is unique. Only when productivity programs reflect this factory-floor reality can they assume strategic importance.
