Abstract

The Monongalia County (West Virginia) School Board initiated a study during 1977--78 to develop a county-wide school bus transportation schedule. During the 11-month study a complete array of school interest groups was involved to help ensure wide public acceptance of the recommendations presented to the board. Implementation of these recommendations by the county superintendent's office resulted in a 38% reduction in early arrival of busses and a 62% reduction in late departure. Significant improvements were also made in reducing overcrowded conditions on busses. Periodic auditing of the bus schedule by bus drivers and school principals has been established to monitor the performance of the system.
