The Pandemic, The Global Food Crisis And Food Security In The European Union

Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the successive pandemic waves, the EUagro-food sector has proven resilient and, despite the difficulties faced by those involved in food supply chains, has kept providing Europeans with sufficient and safe food, from their own production and imports, in the years 2020-2021. The World Bank has warned since 2020 of the global food crisis caused by the pandemic. In the second half of 2021, the specter of the food crisis has become increasingly possible at global and European level, with the escalation of energy and fuel prices found in all products, which reduces the population's access to food, with negative effects on food security. Our article, based on a research study conducted in 2021, aims to present the results of analysis regarding a) the impact of the pandemic on the EU economy, with a case study on Romania, b) the impact of the pandemic on the EU food security and the global food crisis, and c) some ways to avoid the food crisis through measures to support the population's access to food.
