The Covid-19 Pandemic And Its Effects In Latin America And The Caribbean. Perspectives For Strengthening The Eu ́s Relationship With The Region In The New Global Context

Abstract

Across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the current crisis caused by the global spread of Covid-19 adds new challenges for economic recovery, after a period of modest economic growth and political and social tensions in recent years. Most of the LAC governments have taken urgent health, economic and social measures, adopting a number of strategies in this regard, while regional and sub-regional coordination and integration has been passed on a secondary plane. In the short and medium term, there will be a decline in the EU-LAC trade relationship, both in terms of volume and value, even more in the new context in which recent World Bank projections indicate a severe contraction in the LAC economy and of the Eurozone. The present paper seeks to provide an overview of the political, economic and social context of the LAC region, the effects of the global crisis and the measures taken by the states in the region, and prospects of the EU-LAC relationship.
