Abstract

Green bonds are a relatively new instrument in financial markets, and are considered one of the best tools available to finance green projects and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This paper investigates the effects of the Paris Climate Agreement on the green bond market. We focus on US municipal, corporate and government green bonds. We document that the number of such bonds issued have significantly increased immediately after the agreement was adopted, suggesting that the adoption of the Paris Agreement has played a significant role in the development of the green bond market.
