A case study of barriers and drivers for energy efficiency in an Indian city

Abstract

Energy development is an indicator of economic growth. Countries pursuing economic progress are required to resort to increasing degrees of energy usage. Achieving these levels of energy output and utilisation through present technologies is not only difficult and expensive, but also environmentally unsustainable. Energy efficiency generates substantial financial savings while simultaneously improving environmental quality. Despite these benefits, developing countries like India are missing out energy efficiency opportunity and instead concentrating on increased energy production. This report deals with the identification of barriers which prevent implementation of energy efficiency standards, aside from studying drivers which promotes its adoption. The various barriers and drivers are discussed and identified for both residential and commercial sectors in Davangere City, Karnataka State, India. The factor analysis is carried out by principal component analysis (PCA) method to find the barriers which prevent from achieving energy efficiency.
