Abstract

This study presents qualitative research that investigates the top managers' perceptions of a variety of components affecting their intended support for the strategic adoption of Information Technology (IT) for the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Taiwan. Interview letters were sent to 40 selected top managers (owners) of SMEs and 28 usable comments were returned. The results suggest that the perceived strategic importance of IT-based resources is key in the top managers' decision to adopt IT. Five internal strategic factors are found to be inhibitors of top management support in IT adoption. The implications of the results are then discussed.
