Abstract

This study investigates the corporate governance practices of listed firms in India. The specific objectives of this study are to (i) develop an index for corporate governance performance (CGP); (ii) assess the CGP of the listed firms included in BSE 200 index and (iii) compare the CGP of the firms at industry level. The investigation of governance performance of firms suggests that wide variability exists in the governance performance of firms. Overall, the study supports the proposition to put in place the mechanism to monitor and address the level of compliance by the firms, specifically, non-compliance in certain aspects of governance.
